Romeo Mputu
International Artist (Canada)

There are many stars in the South African musical galaxy: talented but ignored, upcoming, rising but unsung, and the well-established. Congo Kinshasa-born Romeo Mputu belongs to the third category, where for some reason an abundance of talent has not been formally recognised or effectively polished.

Nevertheless, the Johannesburg-based musician has been sailing smoothly, and rising to the occasion whenever an opportunity arises. Mputu has performed in the same stage with great SA stars such as HHP, Zakes Bantwini, Stimela, and many more.

Critics have described his performance last year at Macufe in Bloemfontein as simply heart-stopping.

“I want to tour the whole of South Africa to showcase my music and win the hearts of South Africans and other Africans living in SA,” he says. “I also want to do many featurings with SA bands and performing artists, including the likes of Big Nuzz, Morale, Bantwini and Professor. I’m also negotiating with Psyfo (Ajax, formerly of Generations, SABC1) in a view of working on a joint recording project,” he adds.

Mputu’s music is a mixture of soukouss, Afro-jazz and Zouk beats. The Congolese star’s single Good Morning Africa, released late last year, has been well-received by fans and has been making waves on MTV Base (DStv channel 322). He says he is working on his next album whose date of release has not been disclosed. “I’m working on it, and music fans will discover that their man Romeo has truly matured.”

While Mputu remains eternally optimistic about the future of African and SA music, he however deplores the ‘unfair treatment’ meted to African musicians by Africa’s music promoters, which he says disgraces the continent’s art and musicians.
